THE ENSEMBLE

The ensemble was founded in September 2021 by the composer, conductor and Oud-player Shaul Bustan, and performs under his musical direction. Based in Flensburg, it has no fixed lineup but draws on a pool of musicians mainly from Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark, with backgrounds from Germany, Italy, Denmark, Israel, Switzerland and Turkey.

Depending on the project, between five and ten musicians come together, with or without a conductor, on instruments including violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, bassoon and oud, often joined by guest singers.

Rehearsals take place in Flensburg, and concerts are held mainly in Flensburg and across Schleswig-Holstein. The ensemble presents special concerts of new music and forms a young, enthusiastic group in the far north. The music is always project related and composed especially for the ensemble by young composers from Germany, Denmark and around the world.

The styles range across modern classical music, world music, jazz and improvised music, each carrying elements of the musicians' respective cultures and countries. This is new and communicative music that also appeals to audiences who do not usually listen to contemporary music.

The ensemble's opening concert "Frequent Travelers" took place on October 30, 2022 in the special atmosphere of St. Johanniskirche in Flensburg, with pieces by the composers Shaul Bustan (Israel/Flensburg), Kenneth Dahl Knudsen (Denmark/Aalborg), Julia Stegmann (Germany/Siek, Schleswig-Holstein) and Katja Kröger (Germany/Schleswig-Holstein).

GOAL

The ensemble would like to present new compositions by composers from all over the world and from Schleswig-Holstein, regardless of their style, in the most varied and sophisticated concepts possible. The ensemble would like to enrich cultural life in Flensburg and the region with contemporary music and thereby contribute to the expansion of cultural offerings. In addition, the aim of the Flensburg ensemble is to bring about more tolerance and understanding of the unknown through the emotional power of music, to bring people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds together and to discover the beautiful in the unknown and new together.
